Tenerife is an island in the Atlantic Ocean, belonging to the Autonomous Community of Canary Islands (Spain). Next to La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro forms the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. With an area of 2034.38 km ² and a population of 899,833 inhabitants, is the largest island of the Canary Islands and most populous island of Spain.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the capital of the island and of the homonymous province and the largest city with 222,417 inhabitants. Together with Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is also capital of the Canary Islands. Between 1833 and 1927 Santa Cruz de Tenerife was the sole capital of the Canaries, until in 1927 a decree ordered the capital of the Canaries was shared, that's how it remains today. [10] [11] The second largest city the Canary island and third with 150,661 inhabitants is San Cristobal de La Laguna, also city Heritage (the only city that holds such a distinction canaria). Both cities (Santa Cruz de Tenerife and La Laguna) and urban are physically linked, so that together have a population of over 373,078 inhabitants.
